About Arsenal

The U.S. military established the twenty-acre arsenal complex in 1859 to store munitions and other supplies. The arsenal closed in 1949, when Main Avenue was cut through it, and the site was then used for government offices.

The San Antonio Arsenal was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and six nineteenth-century arsenal structures remain, including an office building dating from 1860.
